Start with compatibility
Confirm the client supports both the device operating system and the VPN protocol used by the server. A popular app is not useful if it cannot import the required configuration or integrate safely with platform networking controls.
Check whether the client supports phones, tablets or desktop computers separately; a shared brand name does not guarantee identical features.
Review permissions and configuration handling
VPN clients require permission to create or manage a network tunnel. They should explain this request and avoid unrelated access. Configuration files, credentials and pairing codes should be treated as sensitive data.
Prefer short-lived pairing or controlled configuration import over publishing permanent secrets in public pages or messages.
Look for maintainability
Review update history, security reporting channels, documentation and support contact information. A client that receives clear maintenance is generally easier to operate safely as platforms and protocols change.
Avoid choosing solely from words such as fastest, best or unlimited. Those labels do not describe protocol security, server quality or long-term maintenance.
