Mobile VPN clients
An iPhone VPN or Android VPN client must handle frequent transitions between Wi‑Fi and cellular networks. Mobile operating systems also limit background activity and expose VPN controls through platform networking frameworks.
Good mobile behavior includes clear connection status, safe recovery after network changes and careful use of battery and background time.
Desktop VPN clients
Mac VPN and Windows VPN software often runs on devices with stable power, larger screens and more complex local networking. Desktop users may need access to development tools, virtual machines, local printers or multiple network adapters.
The client should explain routing decisions and permission requests without hiding important system changes.
Choose by platform support, not labels
A VPN app should be designed for the operating system where it runs. Verify supported versions, update delivery, accessibility, configuration import and how the app behaves after sleep, reboot and network changes.
Check the current status of this site’s iOS, Android, macOS and Windows clients on the client compatibility page.
