WireGuard
WireGuard uses a compact design and modern cryptographic choices. It is widely valued for straightforward configuration and good performance, but operators still need secure key distribution, address management and server policies.
A WireGuard tunnel remains only one layer of the overall service. DNS, routing, access control and client update practices still matter.
IKEv2 and IPsec
IKEv2 negotiates security associations for IPsec and is commonly available through operating-system networking frameworks. It can handle changes between Wi‑Fi and mobile networks well when clients and servers are configured for mobility.
Certificate or credential management, proposal selection and firewall compatibility require careful administration.
OpenVPN and other approaches
OpenVPN is mature and configurable, with broad platform support. Its flexibility can help in varied environments, though configuration and performance depend on transport, cipher choices and implementation.
The best protocol is not determined by a single benchmark. Consider platform support, maintainability, network conditions, security review, server compatibility and the operational experience of the team managing it.
