Encryption protects a network segment

A VPN can protect traffic between the client and the VPN server. After traffic leaves that server, application protocols such as HTTPS continue to provide their own protection. A VPN does not replace secure websites or safe account practices.

Strong encryption is useful only when keys are protected, authentication is correct and software is maintained.

Privacy requires a trust decision

Using a VPN shifts part of the trust relationship from the local network or internet provider to the VPN operator. Review who operates the server, what information is collected, how long it is retained and whether claims are supported by clear policies.

Do not assume that every VPN is a no-log VPN. Logging behavior is an operational policy, not an automatic property of a protocol.

Browser and device tracking still exist

Signed-in accounts, cookies, advertising identifiers and browser fingerprints can continue to identify activity even when a VPN changes the network path. Malware or an unsafe device can also expose information before it reaches the tunnel.

Use a VPN as one layer alongside device updates, HTTPS, strong passwords, multi-factor authentication and careful software installation.
